Not long ago I discovered author Joseph A. Altsheler. He died too young in 1919 after writing more than 50 books. He was particularly productive during his last decade, writing about 30 of his novels in that period. His writing is belabored at times with what today we'd consider too-long sentences. But after reading contemporary quick-reads written for a pop audience long sentences that make you think seem fresh and interesting. From his period, Altsheler periodically reflects various non-modern attitudes of bias or even racism toward Indians or Blacks. But in the books I've read he also salutes, for example, Indian character, resolve, fighting prowess, woodcraft, and more. So his books are not one-sided or unpleasant.I was first attracted to and downloaded the eBook, "The Riflemen of the Oho," because I grew up in Ohio. I also like historical novels, so I was hopeful. I'm happy to say my hopes weren't dashed. I thoroughly enjoyed both this peek inside the Eastern woodlands frontier and the five friends, young woodsmen all, Altsheler created. I enjoyed them so much that I soon downloaded all of the books Althseler built around these characters. All these stories are enjoyable.
I recommend this book, and I also recommend Joseph A. Altsheler. He wrote a century ago, but his works are still worth the time of anyone who enjoys frontier history.

I read the book in two days. It was fun, interesting, and it fully kept my attention riveted to the end.
The Rifleman of the Ohio River is an excellent historical fiction. The narrative is fast paced and the descriptions are amazing. If you love history of early America, you will love this book and the entire series.
This is a well written book. The author wrote this at the turn of the nineteenth century for teenage boys. But it is a wonderful story. Dan Brown could take a few lessons from this guy
This book ought to be a movie. Great historical figures as well as fictional ones. Great story keeps you wanting to reading the next page. Hard to put it down.
The story brings alive the early settlements of our country and the brave men who lived off the land and helped to protect the settlers when they could have easily let them perish. It is well written with believable characters.
Fiction based on historical fact, some of my favorite reading. I read some of the books in this series as a kid fifty years ago. What a thrill to find the series, and other books by Altsheler on , for free, and reading the stories again on a . Excellent series. Now for the Civil War series.
I only write reviews when the subject is exceptional -- this read was! I originally downloaded this book almost a year ago. It sat in my "stack" until, on a whim, picked it up and started to read. I could not put it down. The descriptions of the characters, scenery, and events were truly outstanding and stimulated my minds-eye so that sometimes I felt like a physical observer at the time. Few books can give me that kind of experience, but this one did in spades.
